CREATIVE workshops being run at The White Room Creative Space on Lords Meadow in Crediton, have been proving extremely popular.

The new venue opened its doors in September and has been hosting a wide variety of art, craft and creative classes and workshops – almost all of which have been fully booked.

Bindy Saywood, who runs The White Room, comments: “Crediton is bursting with creativity! We have had such lovely feedback and enthusiasm for what is going on here. Some people are wanting to try something new, whilst others are wanting to brush up on old skills.

“So far we have had silver jewellery making, basketmaking, creative writing, and printmaking. We have lots more classes in the pipeline, including mosaic making and pottery. I’m also really pleased that, starting on Wednesday, February 2, Portrait Painter, Genevieve Murray, who has her studio here at The White Room, will be running her four-week acrylic portrait painting evening course.”

Genevieve is a portrait painter who specialises in oil portraits, and has been doing private commissions since graduating from Edinburgh College of Art in 2016.​ She has exhibited in the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition in London and in Bath Society of Artists Open Exhibition 2020.

Bindy added: “We are very lucky to have such an accomplished artist running this course here in Crediton. Genevieve took part in our launch event, Devon Open Studios 2021, a 10-artist exhibition which drew in more than 600 visitors from across Devon. Genevieve was a great member of that artist team, and her work was extremely popular.”

Genevieve’s evening course will focus on capturing expressions and personalities using vivid colour and light.

It will be a small, friendly group ensuring plenty of one-to-one tuition. The course will take participants through a step-by-step process of creating a likeness and exploring the application of paint, and by the end of the four weeks, they will feel confident in using acrylic to mix skin tones and using multiple layers to create depth of colour and likeness of their subject.
