A CREDITON couple today, Thursday, July 5, celebrate their Platinum Wedding anniversary.
Cyril and Kathleen Wollacott, of Searle Street, Crediton, were married 70 years ago at Crediton Methodist Church on July 5, 1948, the same date as the start of the National Health Service.
The couple, who are both aged 92, met during the Second World War.
Cyril was born in Park Street, Crediton, on June 9, 1926.
Kathleen (nee Way) was born in Romsey, Hampshire on September 19, 1926 and during the Second World War was evacuated to live with her auntie in Buller Road, Crediton. Kathleen was a nurse.
The couple met through the Crediton Methodist Church, where Cyril was a Sunday School teacher (now retired) and where Kathleen ran the Women’s Bright House.
During the Second World War Cyril served in the Far East, including Singapore and India.
Upon leaving the Army he had various jobs including carpenter and car mechanic.
He then became a postman in the Crediton area and although long-since retired, is still well-known in the Crediton postal district.
The couple have lived in Crediton since they married and brought up four children, Stephen, Christopher, Catherine and Yvonne.
They have nine grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
They moved to their current home in Searle Street in 1974 where Cyril loves his garden and making things.
Kath was also doing home help up to just a few years ago and was looking after the elderly whom were younger than herself.
The couple were delighted to receive a card of congratulation from HM The Queen.
They have spent time celebrating with their large family.
