THE closure of the A377 through Copplestone is due to be lifted on Tuesday, August 5 after four months, Mid Devon District Council has confirmed.
A section of the road, which operates on a one-way system, was shut to all vehicle and foot traffic on Friday, April 4 over concerns what was left of crumbling former pub The Cross Hotel could fall down.
Most of the outside walls have now been demolished, and hoarding is being put up around the site to facilitate the rest of the demolition and allow the A377 to reopen.
“Southway Construction has begun the erection of this hoarding, which will also provide a storm water diversion, with the addition of sandbags at the bottom of Bewsley Hill,” a Mid Devon District Council spokesperson said.
“The hoarding contractors hope to be completed on site by Tuesday, 5 August.
“Drain clearance and jetting has been organised by the Highways Team and is due to take place on Monday, August 4.
“In addition, a sweeper lorry will be onsite on Tuesday in preparation for the opening of the A377.
“The permanent traffic lights are to be recommissioned and checked and all of the road closures and signage are due to be removed by Tuesday, August 5 to enable the A377 to reopen later that day.”
The road closure is in place from Bassetts Bridge to Bewsley Hill and on part of Bewsley Hill itself. It has proved an inconvenience for many and temporary traffic lights on the open section of the A377 have led to long delays.
Initial demolition work on The Cross Hotel began on Monday, June 23.
The pub also forced a three-week closure of the A377 through Copplestone last August.
