TO mark the very special occasion of the Queen’s 90th Birthday Newton St Cyres Parish Council decided to present all the residents of Newton St Cyres who had reached the age of 90 years or over, and all the children in the Primary School, with a commemorative mug.
The first event was held in the Parish Hall on Sunday, June 12 when the nonagenarians and their friends were invited to a cream tea.
There was a real tea party atmosphere, the tables were decorated with Union Flag napkins and plates and colourful flowers, and red, white and blue balloons hung from the doorways.
Bill Pyle played the accordion for the guests and geared his music to songs that that generation would know.
A few of the Parish Councillors and the Parish Clerk waited on the gathered guests and the Chairman, David Baker, presented all the over 90’s with their celebration mug.
On the following Friday afternoon four parish councillors went to the Primary School Assembly and presented a mug to each of the children.
Chairman, David Baker explained a little of the role of the council and the children told the councillors what they thought the council did. The ideas ranged from keeping the parish clean to putting up tents for events and arranging events.
The council was delighted to receive a lovely letter from resident Reg Mear thanking them for his mug and explaining that he still chuckles when he thinks of how he was presented with his mug at the end of the list with a joke about him being last but not least!
The council also received a lovely poem from Geoff May.
It rather summed up the whole event and the happiness it brought to so many people.
Cllr Jill Baker
