SINCE receiving news about the need for headbands for the NHS, some of the members at Coldridge WI have taken up the challenge and been busy cutting and sewing fabric, to the extent that it has delivered its first batch of 90 headbands to Devon Federation of WI Headquarters as a gift to the staff at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, with love from residents at Coldridge and Lapford.
Coldridge branch member Jo Dike explained: “Many communities are now making the headbands which are needed to protect front line NHS staff from having sore ears.
“The cord or elastic on masks rubs the skin behind the ears and makes life very uncomfortable. The headbands or bandannas have two buttons positioned so that the cord or elastic is stretched around them and suddenly mask wearing is a whole lot more bearable.
“Members of Coldridge WI quickly enlisted the community by inviting people to help with machining, button sewing and donations of fabric, thread and large buttons.
“We are delighted to be joined by Lapford residents from their Volunteer Network in this effort to support our wonderful front line workers.
“Lots of headbands are needed for this countywide project, not only in the major hospitals but also in other medical and care settings and elsewhere, and those working in the project are so pleased to do this for those who are giving so much for us all.
“If anyone could donate large buttons please telephone 01363 83329. The buttons must be at least the size of a 10 pence piece, any colour, made of plastic and flat with no shank.”
