THE Bookery, in partnership with Sustainable Crediton, presents award‑winning climate journalist David Shukman in conversation with Laurie Laybourn on Friday, June 12 at 7pm at the Crediton bookshop.
The Bookery is delighted to welcome David Shukman for a timely and urgent evening marking the publication of his latest book, The Response: A Story of Fire and Flood in Britain’s New World of Extremes. One of the UK’s most trusted voices on climate change, Shukman will be joined by Laurie Laybourn, a leading figure in climate risk, policy and resilience.
Drawing on decades spent reporting from the frontlines of environmental change, The Response is a gripping and deeply human account of how Britain has moved onto the frontline of the climate emergency. From wildfires encroaching on towns to floods devastating communities, Shukman reveals how extreme weather events once thought inconceivable are now unfolding on our doorstep — and how lives have already been lost that could have been saved.
David Shukman was the BBC’s first Science Editor and led its coverage of climate change and the environment for nearly twenty years. He has reported from the Amazon, Antarctica and disaster zones around the world, and was described by Sir David Attenborough as “a leader in raising awareness about the climate emergency”.
Laurie Laybourn is Executive Director of the Strategic Climate Risks Initiative and an award‑winning researcher. He holds fellowships at Chatham House, the University of Exeter and IPPR, advises the UK Climate Change Committee, and regularly appears in the media to discuss climate and systemic risk.
The evening will include an audience Q&A and book signing.
Ticket cost £6 and are available from The Bookery or via www.thebookery.org.uk. Ticketholders receive 10 per cent off purchases of The Response on the evening.
