A NEW business, The Little Lodge Company. based in Shobrooke, makes classic timber framed buildings for garden offices, summer houses, studios, gyms, children’s play houses or garden retreats.
Leslie Hampson, who started the business, said: “Inspired by traditional New England design and the sustainable building materials and methods developed by the Centre for Alternative Technology, the lodges use a ‘principle rafter’ post and beam frame and are finished in solid wood, floor to ceiling.
“Resting on discrete foundation piers, lodges can be located on level or sloping ground, providing a spacious, flexible and restful garden building which is environmentally sensitive, attractive and cost effective.”
He said the aim of The Little Lodge Company is to combine traditional and contemporary design and building techniques – working in close liaison with clients to reflect the site in which each lodge is to be located.
He added: “The lodges are all fully insulated and are finished with waxed wooden floor boards, double glazed wooden doors and windows, low maintenance cladding and decked porches. All timber is FSC certified and additional options include wood burning stoves, power and light fittings and various paint finishes.
“I have a fundamental belief that we should be living more simply and the lodges apply the principles of that belief in terms of the construction methods and materials used and the impact of the lodges on and in the world. Ultimately, the effect is to create a natural, tranquil space that sits lightly on the earth and that reflects and adds to its environment.
“I have always been passionate about working with wood, and training with the Centre for Alternative Technology 10 years ago inspired me to focus my skills around sustainable building techniques, materials and design. I have now set up my own company to put these principles into practice.”
