RESTORATION of the cobbled paths in the Churchyard at Crediton Parish Church is under way.
The original stones are believed to have been laid by French prisoners of war from Dartmoor in the early 1800's.
Birds Contractors, of Down St Mary have been appointed the main contractor and are working under the supervision of church architect John Alexander of Jonathan Rhind Associates.
Howard Egglestone, church co-ordinator explained: "Birds Contractors were chosen because of their expertise in laying cobbles, which is a traditional skill."
All the paths on the south side of the church are being restored and the drainage is being done at the same time.
The original cobbles are being reused and laid along the outside of the paths, while the centre section will be block paving to make it easier for wheelchair access.
Derek Pleace, John Cox, Craig Randal and Stephen Lyon of Birds Contractors have been working hard and hope to be finished by Easter.
