CHULMLEIGH Primary School children have won a £100 prize in the Burton Art Gallery Schools' Exhibition and Beth Poole (parent), Cameron Poole (Y4) and Alice Poole (Y2) went to the awards ceremony on February 4 to collect the prize and certificates.

They received two certificates, one for "Art work of exceptional quality" and a "Certificate of Merit" for "Y6 observational paintings of apples".

A range of art work from different age groups was submitted and displayed, including self portraits (paintings, charcoal and sketches), printwork based on the ideas of William Morris, landscape prints, 3D monster puppets and observational paintings of apples which were completed at the school's Apple Day in October.

On this occasion all the children had-a-go at making their own apple juice, some of which they sampled and some of which was bottled and sold, raising £112 for PTA funds.

Rachel Edworthy's apple painting was selected to be the design on the bottles of apple juice and her design was particularly noted by the judges, as was Liam Kienle's.

The school will spend the prize money on some extra special art materials to further develop the range of art work done in the school.

Certificates were awarded by North Devon Decorative and Fine Arts Society (NADFAS).

Mrs Lindley, deputy executive Headteacher, was delighted to hear of the school's success: "While we are a school that prides itself on outstanding academic achievement, it is really important to us that children develop skills in all areas of the curriculum and it is wonderful to hear that their creative efforts have been recognised."
