CHULMLEIGH’S Old Fair, which began in 1253, is set to take place, in a smaller way, from Tuesday, July 28.
Peter Older, Chairman, Chulmleigh Old Fair Committee, explained: “The Fair has continued every year for 750 years and even continued during two World Wars.
“Not to be thwarted by the dreaded virus, the Fair will still go ahead albeit as a Mini Fair.”
The following is a rough timetable which may be altered according to measures in place at the time:
Tuesday - Opening Church service. Parade of the symbolic white glove to Town Hall, led by Town Crier Ben Farlam, who will read the Charter.
Wednesday - Judging of Scarecrow Competition (open to all), Golf Challenge.
Thursday - Judging of Window Competition, Golf Challenge.
Friday - Treasure Trail results, Golf Challenge, Clay Pigeon Shoot (to be confirmed)
Saturday - Orienteering, Craft Market with Fancy Dress Competition at Playing Field (to be confirmed), Grand Draw.
To help maintain solvency, we will try to hold the Grand Draw.
Mr Older added: “To help maintain solvency, we will try to hold the Grand Draw.
“Donations to help support the Fair would be greatly appreciated.
“Although we will adhere to Government guidelines, we hope things will be more relaxed by then and we can reproduce a little of the atmosphere of our great Fair.”
Many videos of fair’s past have been uploaded to Youtube etc and a road run will also take place this year.
