CONGRATULATIONS to those who organised the great festive procession and Christmas illuminations last week. (A little early to meet Santa Claus, but at least he was the real one, I think).

A good many local groups were visibly present, but Crediton Town Council and the Arts Centre no doubt were working their brilliant festive magic behind the scenes.

A beautiful tree it was, too - when it lit up after three attempts (were they teasing us, I ask?).

The best surprise, though, was surely the enormous turnout, an amazing affirmation of community spirit.

Actually, it was probably good that the High Street wasn't closed off to passing traffic: let them see what a good show Crediton can put on!

Hopefully the shops did well, too. Their lights till 8pm in the evening contributed in a good way.

A nice touch was the complimentary mulled wine and juice kindly served up by Il Casita on St Lawrence Green.

The only gripe? Who needed a commercial radio station to play Slade's greatest Christmas hit (of 40 years ago) when we had such good contemporary musicians in our midst?
