CREDITON Museum reopened yesterday, Thursday, with its Christmas exhibition.

Today, Friday, November 26, it is open from 10am to 4pm and tomorrow, Saturday, November 27, to co-incide with the Crediton Christmas Lights Switch-On, it will be open from 10am until 6.30pm.

The title of the exhibition is “Christmas at the Museum” and it is certainly fascinating and well worth a visit.

Highly skilled Crediton Museum members have worked hard to create an impressive Christmas feast from old newspapers, namely copies of the “Crediton Courier”.

It includes a turkey, ham, Christmas pudding, pie, Christmas cake and other items as part of a Victorian Dinner table with all the Christmas fare.

The exhibition looks at the origins of our traditions such as: Who invented the Christmas Cracker?; Why do we sing Carols at Christmas? and Why did people go "agooding" in Crediton?

The Victorians were important to many of our current traditions so there is a Victorian Lady and her daughter by their Christmas tree and a Victorian Dinner table with Christmas fare.

Devon traditions and photographs of Crediton festivities, provided by the "Courier" and local people, are also included alongside more recent traditions such as Christmas Number Ones and Santa Runs.

For the children there are quizzes, a Scavenger Hunt and "Post a letter to Santa".

It is free entry to the exhibition but cash donations would be welcomed.

Those visiting might also like to become a Friend of Crediton Museum.

There is also for sale a number of local history-related books and booklets, which would make ideal Christmas presents.

The exhibition by Crediton History and Museum Society at The Old Town Hall, Crediton, is open on Thursdays and Fridays in December from 10am to 4pm and on Saturdays from 10am to 1pm.

It will be open on December 20 and 21 from 10am to 4pm and will be closed after Christmas.
