A DUET, an aria "O Lovely Peace" (from Judas Maccabeus) by G.F. Handel, sung by Isabel Tuffin-Donnevert and Emma Richards, finalists in the 2015 BBC Radio Two Chorister of the Year competition, was a highlight of Mid Devon District Council’s Annual Civic Service held at Crediton Parish Church.
The Chairman of Mid Devon District Council, Cllr John Daw, hosted the service, which was conducted by the Rector, Preb Nigel Guthrie.
The thought-provoking address was given by the Right Rev Dame Sarah Mullally, Bishop of Crediton.
It included reference to caring for one’s neighbour as oneself and there was much comment on the current migration crisis.
Guest speaker was Mrs Joanne Jones who spoke of the work of the charity, Farming Community Network, which began 21 years ago.
As an example of the worth of a farmer, she said: "You might visit a doctor two or three times a year and you might also need the services of a solicitor two or three times a year.
"If you are eating three meals a day, then you need a farmer more than a thousand times a year!"
The reading was given by Cllr John Daw and the Gospel was read by John Musty, Churchwarden, and chairman of trustees of Age Concern Crediton.
The prayers were led by Preb Guthrie. They included prayers for those who dedicate their lives to public service.
The Prayer of Saint Boniface of Crediton was read by all during the service.
The Crediton Parish Church Choir sang a number of anthems and led the singing during the service, which included a number of hymns.
The service concluded with The National Anthem.
Among the guests who attended the service were many Mayors and Mayoresses from authorities across the county, including the Lord Mayor of Exeter and Antoine Khayat, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Devon.
Refreshments were enjoyed after the service in the Boniface Centre.
