THERE was great fun at Crediton Community Allotment on Saturday, May 21, when children from Hayward’s Primary School went along to plant two apple trees.

The children, all aged four or five, were from the Early Years class at Hayward’s and were accompanied by their parents and Class Teacher Bridget Merrett.

Christina Dymond, from Sustainable Crediton, which now runs Crediton Community Allotment at the Crediton Town Council-owned Barnfield Allotments, helped the children with the planting process.

This included digging the hole, adding compost, treading in the tree, watering it, etc.

The children also had a nature trail, planted some seeds to take home and enjoyed refreshments, along with parents, thanks to Tesco, Tucker’s Country Store, Crediton Coffee Company and Baobab.

There was also a talk on growing herbs and a “Limber up for Gardening” session.

The weather was perfect for the Allotment Open Day, where the tree planting took place.

On April 23 a Team Day was held at the Allotment.

Christina explained: “The volunteers got a chance to say goodbye to Katheryn Hope from Westbank who did such a wonderful job of establishing the Community Allotment in such difficult times.

“She’s promised to come back and visit us.”

Christina issued a welcome to anyone who might like to volunteer at the Allotment.

She said: “Anyone is welcome to come up on any Wednesday from 11am to 3pm.

“Once you’ve been introduced to the Allotment you can come up anytime. The volunteers have a Whatsapp group so they can make plans to visit together or decide who’s going up to water.

“If anyone needs to arrange another time to have an induction, just message on: [email protected] or on the Crediton Community Allotment Facebook group or page.”
