THE village of Cheriton Fitzpaine, just five miles from Crediton, is holding its annual Flower Festival this month with the theme “A Night at the Oscars”.

The festival is being held at St Matthew’s Church, in the heart of the village. It takes place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 17 to 19 from 10am to 5pm each day.

The event is being organised by the Friends of St Matthew’s and is inspired by the success of the previous flower festivals held to celebrate the many and varied village organisations.

This year more than 25 village organisations will be taking part, with each aiming to express the character of their organisation through unique and colourful flower displays in the church, as well as having a link with the theme “A Night at the Oscars”.

Local residents from under eight to over 80 years in age will be involved. Last year was a feast for the senses, with floral works of art created using Lego, trainers, a bird box, a scrabble board and more.

Alice May, churchwarden, said: “Following last year’s success we are planning an even bigger event this year with more groups taking part. As last time, entry is free.

“As well as enjoying the flowers, perusing the plant stall and voting for the Peoples’ Favourite display, there will be delicious food on offer all day, including morning coffee, tea and cakes, home-made lunches and afternoon teas.

“These are all freshly prepared and served by the many volunteers who work so hard to make this event a success.”

In 2018, the event raised just under £1,000. This money helped in particular with the expense of the church insurance to ensure Cheriton’s wonderful ancient building remains open as a space for all within the centre of the village.

Hazel Norton, also a church warden, added: “Everyone is welcome, both locals and other visitors, to come and enjoy the festival. As you approach the village you can see the church clock tower in the distance, head for it and come and admire our interesting and historical church building as well as all the flower displays.

“It will be a great outing suitable for all who enjoy a drive into the beautiful Devon countryside on a Spring day.”
