NEWTON St Cyres Young Farmers’ Club has had yet another busy month. Its annual Cider and Pasty Quiz was held in February and was assisted by Crediton and Witheridge NFU.

With 30 teams attending, it was a tough competition and there were only a couple of points between the top teams. It was a most successful evening, raising £660 for charity; half for the Farm Community Network and the other half being divided between the club’s charities of the year.

These are Devon Air Ambulance Trust, Crediton Food Bank and Mind. The club would like to thank Jon Lee for being the quizmaster, as well as the NFU for supplying goody bags for the tables and donating the prize money.

In February, the club also put together a short drama sketch which won “Best Scene” at the Haldon Group Entertainments afternoon, held at QE Lower School in Crediton.

Additionally, one of its members, Katie Davie, won “Junior Member of the Year” and went on to represent Haldon group at the county round.

More recently, the club had a tour of Halse South West’s new premises at Daisymount. It was great for the members to see how a small family business has grown into such a successful company which now sells machinery internationally.

Newton St Cyres YFC has an action-packed schedule planned for the next few months, with farm walks, socials and “skills for life” courses to look forward to. If you would like to get involved, please go along to the next meeting which will be held at Newton St Cyres Parish Hall on Tuesday, April 9, commencing at 8pm.

If you would like to get in touch with the club, find it on Facebook or call Club Chairman, George Lee, on 07875 986 248.

Remember, you don’t have to be a young farmer to be a young farmer!
