WHY make them? – A Lasting Power of Attorney “LPA” is a legal document which allows you to nominate a trusted friend or relative to make decisions for you at a time when you are unable.
There are two types of LPA: one for finances and property and the other relating to health and welfare decisions.
Regardless of health or age, every adult should consider preparing a LPA. Capacity can be lost suddenly as a result of accident/illness.
You should consider preparing one if you are making a large financial commitment such as taking on a loan or mortgage, or if you are running a business.
The best time to act is NOW as you can only set up an LPA before you lose mental capacity.
