SANDFORD Heritage Group, in conjunction with St Swithun’s Church and despite torrential rain throughout, held an open afternoon event at Dowrich, Sandford, by kind permission of Michael Lee.
True British spirit meant that the event went ahead on Sunday, September 3, everyone dressed appropriately with Wellies and waterproofs and many with umbrellas.
It included a chance for visitors to see how grain is ground into flour by the water-powered mill at Dowrich.
Due to the wet weather, 4x4 vehicles were used to ferry people to and from the Mill, across two fields.
In addition there was a display of vintage tractors and there was a “Name the Cow” competition.
There was face painting, live music from a Jazz Band, a tombola, a grand raffle and cream teas and other refreshments.
There was a display of World War Two memorabilia by a local enthusiast and the Heritage Group sold copies of its latest booklet and local map coasters.
The name of the cow was guessed as “Bella” by Peter Jackson, who kindly donated his prize money back to the cause.
Michael Lee said he was pleased that more than 300 people attended despite the continuous rain, adding that the event raised more than £1,200 for Sandford Church Roof Repair Fund.
