Both sides were desperate for a result in order to strengthen their promotion chances. A win for Okehampton by a dozen points or so would see them to the top of the table whereas we needed to win by five points to leapfrog our hosts into second place.

The game had all the ingredients needed for an exciting encounter, second v third in the league, local derby.. There is no doubt that we were the better side and the home fans fully supported that view and in truth we really should have won by a wider margin.

An Okey attack caught us offside some 35 metres out and home winger Lee Carey had no difficulty with the penalty. With the advantage of the slope in the second half, confidence was high that we could finish the game off and with fly-half Richard John orchestrating things in the backs we did create a couple of early chances.

It was lock Eddie Yeandle who eventually forced his way through to get the all important score. Two points would never be enough and despite a couple of forays into our '22' they never looked like breaking down our defence. Two Egford penalties finally sealed a deserved victory.
