TO mark the occasion of the Queen’s 90th Birthday, Crediton Town Council, in conjunction with Crediton Scouts, held a Beacon Lighting Ceremony at Beacon Park (opposite Upper Deck), on Thursday, April 21.

The beacon was lit by the Mayor of Crediton, Cllr Frank Letch, with the assistance of Crediton firefighter David Whyte.

More than 150 people went along, including dozens of Scouts, Cubs and leaders, councillors and representatives from the town.

The beacon was gas-powered and was placed inside a roped off area.

Crediton firefighters were on stand-by at the scene and St John Ambulance representatives also attended.

Many people acted as volunteer stewards and some took along Union flags in celebration.

Some of the Scouts made their own Union flags to wave at the event.

There was a cheer and applause when the beacon was lit.

Two motorists parked on Higher Road returned to their vehicles after the ceremony to find that windows on their vehicles had been smashed.

It transpired that stones flying from a dung spreader working in a field across the road from the parked vehicles had hit the vehicles and caused the damage.

The driver of the dung spreader attended the scene to see the damage.
