GOOD friends, Trevor Lewis and Pete Ofield, who recently appeared on the BBC’s Bargain Hunt television programme are now working together to help adults with special needs.
Trevor and Pete, who have known each other for years, came up with the idea of encouraging adults with special needs to use the gym at HM Exeter Prison and to benefit from physical activity.
Trevor works at the prison as a Physical Education Instructor and Pete works with adults with learning disabilities at Orchard View in Bow. They thought it would be a good idea to work together to boost links with special needs groups so that they can work with selected prisoners, which they say is beneficial to all concerned.
During the 90’s Trevor had clients attending from Copplestone and Exeter and even had a group from the Ukraine when the Chernobyl children came over.
Pete takes a group of people with learning disabilities into the prison gym every Thursday where Trevor and his five orderlies help and supervise the gym sessions.
"My lads are absolutely brilliant," said Trevor.
"One of them has even got an early release because he’s had glowing reports about the work he has been doing in the gym helping those with special needs.
As the venture has been so successful Trevor is hoping to open up the prison gym to anyone in the Crediton area who has learning disabilities and might benefit from using the gym (there is no monetary payment for using the facilities).
