A DEVON charity which helps put a stop to young people sleeping rough held a barbecue for volunteers in Crediton.

The Mayor of Crediton, Cllr Frank Letch, and Mayoress, Mrs Natalia Letch, attended the barbecue at the George Hill home of David and Mary Nation, who are supporters of Nightstop Devon.

David Nation told the Courier: "Nightstop Devon is a national charity which provides occasional overnight accommodation for homeless people between the ages of 16 and 25.

"Really the volunteers who put the youngsters up in their homes provide an evening meal and bed and breakfast for the odd night.

"The service is mainly used by youngsters who have fallen out with parents or a partner or are those who just run into a crisis following perhaps, loss of work, unpaid rent, are delayed in moving on to a job or new accommodation."

David Nation was the chef for the lunchtime barbecue and his culinary skills were much appreciated.

He and his wife were thanked by the Mayor and Nightstop supporters for hosting the barbecue.

The Mayor congratulated the volunteers on their involvement with Nightstop and said that they played an important part in helping young people at a time of need.

Linda Hutchings, volunteer support manager, Nightstop Devon, said: "Nightstop Devon aims to ensure that young people don't face a night on the streets.

"We are always seeking new volunteers and would welcome enquiries from people across Mid and East Devon, Exeter and Teignbridge."

Everyone referred to the scheme has to undergo a risk assessment before being placed on a Nightstop.

Likewise, all hosts have induction training and a CRB check before starting.
