WEST Country author David Axtell has drawn on his knowledge and experience of Exeter and the surrounding area in writing his latest book, a crime story entitled "The Beast of Stoke Woods".

Early in 1980, Harry returns to his home town of Exeter after serving a prison sentence for a crime he did not commit. While he is sleeping rough he makes contact with an amateur sleuth who agrees to help him to clear his name.

He also arranges to meet his childhood sweetheart in the hope of rekindling their love. As the investigation continues they uncover deep-rooted fear and deception spanning many years and all encounter personal danger.

David Axtell was educated in the West Country and worked for many years as a journalist in London. His previous books include "West of Windmill Hill", memories of a 1950s childhood in the Holsworthy and Bude area.

"The Beast of Stoke Woods", price £7.99, is available from the Crediton Community Bookshop and also at WHSmith in the Guildhall Shopping Centre in Exeter.
