THE Friends of Crediton Library (FoCL) has launched a funding campaign to raise £7,500 to transform the library’s outside space into a new garden and seating area accessible to all users.
Paul Vincent, Chair of FoCL, said: “The garden area has lots of potential to become a special community space. Our aim is that visitors to the library will soon be able to benefit from sunshine and fresh air as part of their visit.”
At its meeting on June 10, FoCL set a target to achieve this sum within 12 months, through appeals to individual donors, applications to grant-giving organisations and potential commercial sponsors.
In addition, FoCL continues to raise funds through regular sales of donated books and a programme of evening events during the winter months.
A total of £2,700 has already been raised towards the target for the Community Garden project through a grant of £2,000 from Invest in Devon and a range of local donors including Crediton Knitwits, Crediton Lions and Crediton Garden Club.
It is hoped to commission a wooden seat for the Community Garden from local sculptor James Bond and involve members of the community in carving and embellishing the bench during its installation.
Library Supervisor at Crediton Library, Sue Lee, said: “We would like as many people as possible to feel involved in this project.
“We are keen to promote the library as a friendly accessible community space for all and are thrilled to be working with our fantastic Friends Group on this ambitious plan.”
Crediton Library is one of 50 Devon Libraries run by charity Libraries Unlimited.
“Libraries Unlimited was formed in April 2016 in order to take on the running of Devon’s Libraries on behalf of Devon County Council to secure a more financially sustainable future for all of the county’s libraries.
The charity and local library staff work closely with Friends Groups across the county, who fundraise for non-essential items that can enhance the existing work of their local library and help the library reach a wider, more diverse community.
Among other projects, FoCL recently funded the adding of castors to two shelf units. This has enabled previously static shelves to be moved easily, creating space for seated audience events, presentations and performances. FoCL has also funded the purchase of a projector screen and PA equipment.
At the end of this summer, it is sponsoring a disco and party event at Crediton Old Town Hall for children completing the annual Summer Reading Challenge.
The Friends often volunteer to help out with Library promotional activities, and provide hospitality at events.
Earlier this month FoCL hosted a well-attended presentation by author and journalist Donald Macintyre, discussing his recent book “Gaza – Preparing for Dawn”.
FoCL welcomes new members and supporters who would like to be informed about events, or be more closely involved in activities at the library. Donations and sponsorship from businesses would be very welcome towards the Community Garden project. Anyone interested should drop in to Crediton Library or contact staff on 01363 772578.
