THIS month’s first Farmers’ Market at Crediton, the first of the new year, was fairly quiet, some traders taking a break.

The market had been established in 1998 and in 2005 moved to Belle Parade from the space that became the town square, returning two years later.

Second market this year will be on Saturday, January 21 and will be a “marmalade market” with marmalade demonstrations, recipes and games, being in the Seville orange season.

Lori Reich of Shute Fruit who includes a range of marmalades in her preserves will be demonstrating. It is likely Paddington Bear might visit as well as a hunt-the-orange game.

Ruth Beckley, Ruth’s Real Food, will have “something with marmalade” again this year. Last year it was a chocolate and orange bread and butter pudding, using Cobley Farm eggs, available at the market.

This year, for the first time, Lori made a whisky marmalade. “One year I found a bottle of old bourbon in the back of a cupboard, used that and I ate the lot it was so good.

“I’ve not done that this year, but it is still ‘ooohh’ marmalade. Then there are all the other flavours,” she said. Shute Fruit are regular winners of national and international marmalade awards.

March 18 is one of the special markets coming up this year, the first of the three craft markets.
