MORE than 30 pilgrims joined the launch of The Little Dart Way, a new Pilgrim Route, on Saturday, June 14.
The pilgrimage, led by John Rhodes, started shortly after 9.30am at All Saints Church in Eggesford, with a short prayer said by the Archdeacon of Barnstaple, the Venerable Verena Breed.
The pilgrims stopped for mid-day refreshments at the Jubilee Hall in Chawleigh, where they were hosted by St James Parish Church, and again at 3pm at St Mary Magdalene Church at Chulmleigh, before returning to Eggesford by 6.30pm.
Robert Middleton of Chawleigh explained: “The UK has seen a resurgence of interest in pilgrimage, with many historic routes and sites experiencing renewed popularity.
“This revival is driven by a desire for spiritual growth, connection with nature and a sense of community.
“Pilgrims are drawn to the UK’s beautiful landscapes and sacred sites, as well as historic churches and cathedrals.”
The newly launched Little Dart Way is a circular pilgrimage/walking route of approximately 12.5 miles, taking in three rural Devon Churches: All Saints at Eggesford, St James at Chawleigh and St Mary Magdalene in Chulmleigh.

Robert continued: “A keen pilgrim myself, back in December 2024 I embarked on a year-long daily pilgrimage in aid the Devon Historic Churches Trust.
“I am walking at least 12,000 steps (9km) a day, until the feast of Epiphany on January 6, 2026.
The total raised by Robert so far is £711 with £153.25 in Gift Aid.”
Devon Historic Churches Trust is dedicated to funding repairs and maintenance of places of worship in the Diocese of Exeter and throughout Devon. It provides grants in a simple and accessible formula.
