IN churches, pubs and in the open air the sound of carols being sung has lifted spirits this year, for who doesn’t love a good carol? The line “Light and life to all he brings, risen with healing in his wings” struck me afresh, given the circumstances in which we find ourselves.

The theme of light overcoming darkness is central to Christmas, summed up in the words of John, the gospel writer, who wrote of Jesus – the light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not overcome it. It’s a theme that has become important to me.

Each morning I light a candle to remind me of the presence of God who continues to be a source of hope and encouragement.

This has seemed particularly significant in recent days, not just for me but for our nation.

As Christians prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus who came to be light for the world, I am challenged to notice the darkness that lingers in my own life and be aware of the difficulties that blight the lives of others.

More than that I am reminded that my prayers and actions can make a difference. Jesus encourages his followers to act in practical ways, responding to the needs of those around them.

This Christmas may each one of us let our light shine and bless others through kindly words or practical help.
