PROPOSALS for a car park at Newton St Cyres Primary School have moved a step forward. Members of the parish council were told at their October meeting that a positive response concerning fund-raising had been received and agreed to discuss the making of a planning application at its November meeting.

The council was told that the county's mobile library service wished to use the space outside the village Post Office for one hour once a fortnight.

Concerned about the present lack of parking for visitors to the Post Office, councillors decided to refer the matter back to the library service.

Councillors were not happy, either, about a planning application to build a dwelling in the grounds of Enniskerry, Sand Down Lane, following the removal of a garage.

After hearing submissions and comments by members of the public and then discussing the situation members recommended that the application be turned down.

They felt the dwelling would be too big for the space, would be too close to neighbouring property, would be in front of the present building line and would also mean the demolition of some of the Devon bank.

It was reported that the notice board on the village green needed to be re-stained and advice will be sought and that the public seat on Station Hill was being repaired.

Trees on the village green will be inspected to see whether pruning is required.

One hundred replies had been received as part of the recent housing needs survey and the result was awaited.

The bus shelter in the middle of the village, recently damaged by an accident, needs to be replaced and the insurance company is dealing with the matter.

The parish council is to ask whether a light at the parish hall can have a timer switch fitted. At present the light remains switched on through the night.

The council has been told that new signs at the entrance to the village on the A377,

pointing out that a community speed watch operates are the first of their kind in Devon. Similar signs are scheduled for Crediton. Eight councillors, MDDC cllr Peter Hare-Scott and eight members of the public attended the October meeting of the parish council. The next meeting will be held in the clubroom at the parish hall on Monday, November 1, starting at 7.30 pm. The next parish surgery will be held in conjunction with the mini-market on Saturday, November 27, from 10.30am until 12noon. JB
