NORTH Tawton firefighters helped save a number of alpacas while they were putting out a field fire at a Dartmoor farm on Tuesday, August 12.

Alongside crews from Chagford, Bovey Tracey and Moretonhampstead, they fought the blaze across multiple sectors using 4x4s and water from the nearby Tottiford Reservoir.

After extinguishing the fire, the firefighters were able to meet some of the alpacas they had saved.

“Fantastic teamwork from all attending crews ensured the situation was dealt with swiftly and safely,” a Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said.

“Once we were finished cleaning up... the landowner was kind enough to let the crew meet some of the alpacas that we had been able to get to safety as the fires were spreading to their paddock!”
