A 4X4 vehicle, which reversed across the carriageway at what a witness described as “at a colossal rate of knots” was said to have caused a serious road traffic accident in Crediton High Street at about 3pm today, Wednesday, November 21.

Michael Smith, who had been driving along Crediton High Street said: “The car took off across the road in reverse and hit a BMW car trying to park.

“It pushed the BMW half up onto the pavement right outside Olivia James gift shop.

“How the 4x4 didn’t hit the red car in front of me I do not know.

“It reversed across at a colossal rate of knots. There were two people in the 4x4 and I don’t think they were hurt but the man in the BMW looked shellshocked.”

A Crediton fire crew was quickly on the scene and removed the car door to gain access to the man and then extended care to him while he was still in the silver-coloured BMW.

Police attended to control traffic and for some of the time the High Street was closed to traffic.

A one-way system was then operated under police direction.

A second Crediton appliance attended and a Devon Air Ambulance landed in Newcombes Meadow.

Paramedics ran to the scene from the air ambulance with their heavy equipment packs.

On arrival they treated the man still within the car.

A land ambulance arrived and the man was then removed and placed on a stretcher and put into the ambulance before being taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

The 4x4 vehicle was a Hyundai Santa fe.

The High Street has now been re-opened fully to traffic.
