THE Give and Take week, run last month by Sustainable Crediton’s Waste Action Group, was a resounding success with more than 1,150 visitors finding treasures to take home with them.
The event which was held at Crediton Methodist Church Hall saw a large amount of clothing, books, toys, bric-a-brac, cds and all sorts of other household items passed in and out of the premises.
Exercise equipment and a very large dog bed were just some of the items brought in (and taken out).
The organisers are grateful to all those who volunteered to help at the event, and also to all those people who attended.
The Methodist Church café was also run alongside the event, with people enjoying home-made cakes and delicious soup. There were also new (but recycled) greetings cards on sale.
The Waste Action Group will now be reviewing the event, and deciding what to do next.
On the final day of the Give and Take week Recycle Devon ran a “Repair It” event which saw 15 people take 20 broken electrical items for the menders to work their magic on.
Based on London’s Restart events five menders volunteered their time and skills, namely Mike whose day job is working on the technical side for a renewable energy company; Trevor - who used to work in telecoms and Ashley who has an engineering background as well as local computer repair business PC MOT.
The electrical menders worked non-stop as soon as the morning started but surprisingly, not a single computer came through the door for PC MOT so were kept busy with a couple of printers and mobile telephones instead!
Sixty per cent of the items taken to the event were “progressed” in some way - which is to say either fixed, diagnosed, improved or at least the person bringing the item knew where to go next for help.
Thanks goes to all of the menders and people who took their broken items along.
