ON Friday, March 23, Hayward's Primary School was pleased to be able to welcome its Open the Book volunteers into school to share a performance of part of the Easter story.

At the end of the performance, the volunteers, staff and pupils also celebrated a very special birthday.

Mr John Allen recently celebrated his 104th birthday and still volunteers regularly, sharing stories via video or "live" in school.

Each class made John a card and the whole school sang "Happy Birthday".

Pre-covid John celebrated his 100th birthday at the school.

Teacher Hannah Down explained: "Open the Book is very much part of our school community and we greatly appreciate all the volunteers do."
