CREDITON Tennis A continued their impressive run at the top of the table with a convincing 6–2 away win at Victoria Park on Friday, June 26, played in scorching 28-degree summers evening that saw the ball fizzing through the courts.

The conditions perfectly suited the top spin heavy style of Callum Duggan and Joe Cookson.

Duggan, currently enjoying a rich vein of form, combined aggressive returning with powerful groundstrokes, while Cookson’s sharp net play complemented him superbly.

The duo took control early against Matthew Dent and Rob Hayes, securing the first set 6–4 before accelerating through the second 6–1 in dominant fashion.

On the adjacent court, Ed Poultney and Chris Ward were pushed hard by Chris King and Joshua Parkin but held their nerve in a tight opening set, edging it 7–6 before pulling clear to win the second set 6–3.

The second round of rubbers proved more challenging for Crediton.

Ward and Poultney struggled to find rhythm against a resurgent Dent and Hayes, whose improved serving and excellent net play—particularly from Hayes—proved decisive. A rare defeat for the Crediton pair; 3–6, 2–6.

Duggan and Cookson maintained their momentum in their second match against King and Parkin.

Racing out of the blocks, Duggan’s ferocious forehand repeatedly forced weak returns, allowing Cookson to dominate at the net as they sprinted to a first set shut out 6-0. Although the Victoria Park pair rallied from 5–1 down in the second set, Crediton held firm to close it out 6–4.

The overall 6–2 victory ensures Crediton A remain top of Exeter and District Division 5. With four matches left to play—the ball is firmly in their court.
