ON another hot summer evening, Crediton Tennis A hosted Tiverton on Tuesday, July 21, continuing a season in which the weather has been remarkably kind, with not a single fixture postponed.

The home side knew that just two sets would be enough to secure the Exeter and District Division 5 title, and they made sure there would be no late drama, producing one of their most commanding displays of the season to seal the championship in style.

Paul Reed and Ed Poultney wasted little time in putting one hand on the trophy, racing to a convincing 6-2, 6-2 victory over Matt Hodson and Tom Hatton.

After some strong opening rallies, the Crediton pair's excellent net play proved too much for Tiverton's accomplished baseline hitters. Consistent serving and sharp volleys allowed them to dictate the majority of points from the outset.

On the adjoining court, Joe Cookson and Callum Duggan were equally impressive against Isaac Stephens and Peter Wood.

Both Crediton players served superbly throughout, creating several short points and piling pressure on their opponents. Their aggressive approach paid off as they cruised to an emphatic 6-1, 6-1 victory.

With four sets already secured by the halfway stage, Crediton knew the league title was theirs and could relax into the second round of rubbers.

Tiverton continued to compete in excellent spirit, but once again they struggled to contain Crediton's confident attacking play at the net.

Reed and Cookson completed another straight-sets victory, while Poultney and Duggan matched them to secure an identical result and complete a comprehensive 8-0 success.

The final score arguably represented Crediton's most dominant performance of the campaign. All four players served consistently well, returned with confidence and worked effectively as partnerships to keep Tiverton under pressure throughout the evening.

The victory confirms Crediton as Exeter and District Division 5 champions and secures promotion to Division 4.

It is a richly deserved achievement for a side that has suffered just one defeat all season and has grown stronger together with every match. They will head into next season full of confidence after an outstanding championship-winning campaign.
