CREDITON SECONDS 32 - TIVERTON 10
CREDITON RFC’s First Fifteen were scheduled to play their home league fixture against St Ives on Saturday, September 21. Sadly, the game did not take place as they were unable to raise a side.
For a club with such a proud heritage, this is proving a difficult season and we can only hope that their fortunes change in the not too distant future.
It was left to the Second Fifteen to fly the flag at home against Tiverton Seconds in a Devon Merit Table One fixture and they certainly did not disappoint.
It took a while for both sides to settle into the game and certainly it looked from the outset that there would not be a great deal between them.
The opening exchanges saw an exchange of penalties, Gareth Kinch knocking ours over to be all square after the first quarter.
We did begin to up the pace a bit and a break by centre Oli Coupe saw him then put a neat grubber kick through for winger Tom O’Donnell to follow up and dribble the ball through to the try-line in a manner that would have made Lionel Messi proud, before touching down.
Tom Ronchetti added the extras to complete the first half scoring.
We upped the pace a bit in the second half and were rewarded with a well-taken try from Sam Rowe and that was quickly followed by another, this time from lock Callum Anthony off a driving maul. Ronchetti converting one.
At 22-3 there was only going to be one winner and when O’Donnell bagged two more for his hat-trick it was game over. Tivvy did have the last word with a well-taken try but it proved too little too late.
However, Tiverton did end the day with honours even as their Thirds got the better of our Thirds 45-20. This was a very young Kirton side against an experienced Tivvy team containing several players who graced their First Fifteen less than five years ago.
Nonetheless we performed pretty well and scored four tries. Ashley Wonnacott made a rare appearance and celebrated in style with a try, winger Liam Staite touched down twice so that is three tries in two games for him and Matt Moyes wrestled his way over to complete the scoring.
The Colts fought hard at Barnstaple and gained scant reward for their efforts in a 41-5 defeat. Ed Sibley scored our solitary try.
Tomorrow, Saturday, September 28 we travel to Bridgwater as we attempt to maintain our 100 per cent record in South West One; the Second Fifteen entertain last season’s Merit Table Champions, Okehampton, and the Thirds host Bideford Seconds. The Colts travel to Plymstock for a friendly.
