IT was Chew Valley’s first visit to Blagdon on Saturday, October 5 and they certainly would have enjoyed themselves, heading back home with five points in the bag, especially after providing some post match entertainment in the bar.

In truth they were the better side on the day and we can have few complaints. However, as good as they were, our lads will be the first to admit that their own performance was not the best. Rest assured they will be working hard to put that right!

It all started brightly enough as we won a penalty immediately from the kick-off and Ollie Avery-Wright duly slotted it between the uprights for a 3-0 lead.

Chew Valley responded with a converted try and then began to dominate possession and territory. They looked sharp and were testing our defence, which looked uncharacteristically fragile at times.

The visitors were prone to giving away penalties though and on the few occasions we got into their territory, Ollie Avery-Wright made them pay. He slotted three more in the first half, to one from Chew Valley to put us 12-10 up at the break.

We had managed to keep ourselves in the game and the home crowd were hoping that this would ignite an improved second half performance.

Unfortunately, it was the visitors who turned up the heat, playing with width and at a pace that we were struggling to contain. Three further tries, one of which was converted, saw them extend their lead to 12-29 with 10 minutes to go.

With time running out we finally managed to bring some intensity to our game and were rewarded with a try for Josh Woodland which Avery-Wright converted for a final score of 19-29.

We did have the better of things in the scrum but the lineouts were at best erratic. A disappointing result and performance for sure but that’s sport and that’s the standards the boys have set themselves!

We won’t get down about it and we won’t dwell on it. We will dust ourselves off and go again next week!

On the whole, a decent performance from the Seconds, very much a case of our forwards getting much the better of theirs but their backs having a bit too much for us.

Nonetheless a losing bonus point plus a four-try bonus point is not a bad return.

CREDITON 3RDS 26 - EXETER ENGINEERS 5

A really good performance from the Thirds on a pleasant Wednesday evening under lights. The Engineers are renowned for having a pacey back line and often posed a threat.

However, our defence was outstanding. It was an evenly contested game throughout with scoring opportunities few and far between. Full-back Hayden Hill slotted two penalties in the first half for a 6-0 interval lead.

An early second half try from winger Tyler Farley, who saw off a couple of defenders to go over in the corner, extended the lead.

Brad Baker landed the conversion and when his brother Scott went over from a driving maul it meant that the visitors had to score three times. They got one back late on in the game but that was as good as it got for them.

CREDITON COLTS 7 - OKEHAMPTON COLTS 26

The Colts put up strong resistance against a well-drilled and experienced Okehampton side.

We were still in it at half-time as Okey led 14-7 but they added a further 12 points without reply to run out comfortable winners.

On Saturday, October 12, the First Fifteen travel to Cleve on the outskirts of Bristol and will try to get back to winning ways. The Seconds entertain Cullompton whilst the Thirds and Colts travel to North Tawton and Exmouth respectively.
