THE old tennis clubhouse at the Recreation Ground in Newton St Cyres has undergone an amazing transformation, thanks to Viridor Credits, which has part-funded an extension and improvement project through the Landfill Communities Fund.
The old hut, originally a beach hut that was moved from Exmouth in the 1960s, had been woefully inadequate for many years but funding a new build or a renovation had not been possible until Viridor Credits recognised the club’s potential in a growing community with a grant of £8,090.
The extensions include a viewing area overlooking the courts, a changing and storage area and new kitchen facilities.
The interior and exterior have been completely repainted and the floor recovered.
The clubhouse now has the facilities for members to host guests and visiting teams in comfort and for spectators to watch tennis being played in the warmth of the new viewing area.
The club had some funds in reserve for future court maintenance and repairs, and club members with paint brushes, saws, sanders and recycling skills, have created a beautiful fit-for-purpose clubhouse.
Tennis has enjoyed a rise in popularity in recent years and the Tennis Club has grown to more than 120 members. There are four club sessions each week and junior coaching sessions for five to 18-year-olds after school.
“The club welcomes new members of all ages and abilities, so come along and join us for some healthy exercise and good company,” says club chair Elaine Hennessy.
The building work was undertaken by local businesses and member Martyn Hopwood project managed the whole scheme.
The club is planning a “Grand Opening” of the new clubhouse on Sunday, August 5 to coincide with the annual Club Tournaments Finals Day.
All are welcome to go along and watch some exciting tennis and have a look at the new Clubhouse from 2pm onwards.
