THROUGHOUT the summer many competitions of one type or another take place each week at Downes Crediton Golf Club.
In addition to the planned calendar of events for club members, there are many occasions when the club is pleased to welcome other organisations and societies to use the club for their own events.
Often these are related to a charitable cause. Some of the larger events have involved football clubs, and recently the Exeter YMCA held a charity competition at the club.
YMCA Exeter had a fantastic time hosting their Golf Day Fundraiser at the Club, generating more than £3,000 to support their work providing housing for young people at risk of homelessness in Devon.
More than 10 local businesses were represented at the event, with YMCA supporters, both old and new, coming together for 18 holes of golf.

There were many good performances, including a hole in one by Mr Duncan Taylor.
Overall competition winners were Joel Buckley’s team of Buckley Whitmoor-Pryer Ltd.
YMCA Exeter would like to thank their generous hole sponsors: Coreus, AWP, 64 Consultancy, and Jonathan Collins & Co, as well as the team at Downes Crediton for helping to make the day such a success.
YMCA Exeter ensures that local young people at risk of homelessness have access to safe housing, wellbeing support, and opportunities for personal growth. They also deliver community initiatives such as youth clubs, a children’s wellbeing service, and forest schools to help young people and their families thrive in Exeter and beyond.

On Monday, October 6 a very large field of Seniors turned out for the David Moss Vase. The weekend gales had subsided, so the Seniors were able to enjoy a round in fair weather.
The winner of the Vase was Kevin Balding, with the score of 40 points, just pipping Jerome Davis by virtue of a better back nine.
The following day, a bright and sunny Tuesday, the ladies took on the seniors in the annual Lin Ashman Trophy.

There was a great deal of laughter and banter especially when being attacked by swarms of ladybirds.
The green keepers were very kind to the ladies (only on the front 9) with very generous tee positions which caused a good deal of mock grumpy comments from the Seniors, but they still managed to beat the ladies 2½ to 1½.
The golf was followed by a delicious meal prepared by Josh, and served by Tiffany and Jo. There were lots of smiles, jokes, and good humour. A great day enjoyed by everyone.
Looking Back to last Saturday, October 4, which didn’t get a mention in last week’s article, there was a fantastic performance from Steve Whyte.
He returned a remarkable nett 65 to win the Norman Sutton Medal in quite extraordinary windy and gusty conditions.
The midweek Stapleford on Wednesday, October 8 was won by Eric Fee with 40 points and in the Thursday 9 hole competition Jeremy Thornton returned the winning score of 20 points.
On Saturday, October 11, it was the Champions Trophy and Club Medal competition.
A large field of 82 players took part in this prestigious event. The eventual winner was Tristan Kershaw with a very creditable round of 65. Congratulations to Tristan.
