DOWNES Crediton Golf Club Seniors Medal was held on Monday, August 6 and saw some terrific scoring with John Dean finishing top of the pile with a superb nett 65 to take victory and Division One.

Seniors captain, Alan Draper, (nett 68) followed in second place whilst Brian Victory (nett 68) took third.

Division Two saw three pairs post nett 66’s but it was Brian Johnston who took the win courtesy of a better back nine with Bill Dick second and Paul Willcocks third.

The Midweek Stableford on Wednesday, August 8 was won by Kev Macpherson scoring a fine 39 points. Nigel Chard (38 pts) followed in second place.

Thursday, August 9 saw Downes ladies play the Macmillan and Jill Aldworth County Stableford 9 and it was the in-form Ying Wong who took the victory with a points tally of 38.

This also gave Wong the win in Division One with Tracey Chandler (37 pts) in second, a point further back.

Division Two saw both Di Botterill and Sue Barr post 35 points with Botterill taking the win by virtue of a better back nine holes.

Saturday, August 11 saw Downes members play in the annual Professionals Day with two different events taking place with morning and afternoon shotgun starts.

The morning shotgun start saw a “Beat the Pros” Texas Scramble and although no team could surpass the Pros team of Austin, Greenslade and Greenslade’s score of gross 57, there was still some fine scoring.

The team of Gerald Abdoll, Nic Freytag and Martyn Sargent scored a very impressive nett 57.3 to take first place whilst Neil Bishop, Paul Conabeare and Ben Dommett placed second scoring a nett 59.5.

The afternoon shotgun start saw the eagerly contested Team Austin verses Team Greenslade with team members playing a pairs stableford and all scores going towards a cumulative total to find the winning team.

After a fun afternoon’s golf, with much banter between teams, at the end of play when all scores were totalled together it was a tie!

This saw Austin and Greenslade take to the 18th hole for playoff where a regulation par 3 saw victory for Team Austin much to the jubilation of his team.

The evening saw the competitive edge continue with a fun Steak and Quiz night.
