MONDAY, July 29 saw Downes Crediton Golf Club Seniors play in the second round of their Club Championship, which concluded the competition that had begun the week before.

In Division Three it was Robert Dobson who took this year’s trophy in a very tight encounter with Arthur Moughton as they both shot a 179 (39 over) but with Robert’s second round of 93 he won on a better back nine to claim the title.

In Division Two it was Brian Williams who came from behind to win the trophy scoring a 168 (28 over) to win by one shot over Simon Mannell who scored a 169 (29 over) to finish second.

In Division One it was Peter Russell who stole the show winning the club champs by seven shots as he scored a 155 (15 over) while Jim Dunlop finished second with a 162 (22 over).

Tuesday, July 30 saw a nine-hole stableford event for the ladies and it was Doreen Warren who claimed top spot with a stableford score of 18 points.

Darren Sandercock won the Midweek Stableford on Wednesday, July 31 by a comfortable margin. He posted an incredible 44 points, and took the victory by six points.

The Thursday (August 1) evening Stableford saw Jerry Thornton take the victory with 21 points.

With the course looking in great condition, Saturday, August 3 saw Downes host the monthly medal. In a field of 70, Richard Dyer was the star of the show with a superb nett 65 (five under) to win this year’s Submariners Shield and Division One prize. Ashley Cross was second with a nett 67 (three under).

In Division Two John Cornish was first with a great score of nett 68 (two under) and Tom Berry scored a nett 70 (level) to take second place.

In Division Three it was Stuart Willcocks who stole the show as he shot a nett 65 (five under) to claim top spot with Tony Wonnacott on nett 71 (one over) finishing in second place. In the scratch it was Ollie Greenslade who scored a gross 71 to take the prize.

Congratulations go to our Downes Ladies who lifted the prestigious County “Western Morning News” Trophy at Tiverton Golf Club.

Scoring a superb team 78 points, they finished 11 clear of their nearest challenges.
