AFTER last week's win in Devon Intermediate First round, Sandford AFC got back to league action when they entertained Exeter University 8th at the George V Playing Field.

On a grey and windy afternoon Sandford kicked-off playing away from the Pavilion end.

With the wind in faces the “ford’s” first chance came after six minutes when James Stanbury had a free kick saved by the keeper.

The first half was an even affair and at half-time the score was 0-0.

The second half saw Sandford playing with a slight wind at their backs and on 48 minutes Matt Baker had a shot on goal which unfortunately came to his wrong foot so was lacking in power and the uni keeper wasn't troubled.

A minute later the uni attack broke away down field and scored, 0-1.

Sandford kept pressing and their efforts were rewarded when one of their players was fouled in the penalty area.

Sam Reeves took the penalty kick which just beat the keeper’s hand into the corner of the net, 1-1.

The game then sprang into life, both teams looking for the winner.

Sandford keeper Shaun Hawkins was using the wind to great effect, forcing the away defence back on its heels and "ford" brought on younger players halfway through the half.

On the 83 minute Jayden Friend, playing up front, seized on a long ball and slotted it perfectly past the keeper, 1-2 to the "ford".

The last few minutes were hectic with the students looking for an equaliser but Sandford’s defence stood firm and at the final whistle the score stood at 1-2 to Sandford.

This was an away fixture but played at Sandford because the university pitches were not available.

Another three points and another brilliant performance from the whole squad. Well done lads.

Next Saturday Sandford are home to Cheriton Fitzpaine, KO 3pm.
