TUESDAY, December 17 was Crediton Youth Under 14s last football training session before Christmas. It had a festive feel with Christmas hats worn and sweets being eaten.

Instead of a usual football training session there was a match played: parents/coaches against the under 14s.

It was a very one-sided match with the under 14s running riot from the start. The adults lacked fitness and stamina (and skill) and this was apparent in the game.

They relied heavily on Dave “José” Hughes’ goal-hanging and waiting for opportunities, with Andrew “Knoxy” Knox struggling to contain hoards of kids running at him in defence and Lucy James putting in a fine effort.

Coach Steve “the Postie” James found he couldn’t deliver during the match and Dave “DIY” Hartshorne couldn’t fix the leaks in defence.

They tried to “practice what they preach” to us every week, but failed. Unfortunately coach Darren Crump couldn’t make training; the big question being would his presence have changed their fortunes?

Finn Warren is not usually great in goal but managed to save a penalty taken by Reece Burnison, the opposition’s goalie.

Tyler Lander and Sam Harris found themselves in defence with time on their hands, deciding to occupy themselves by doing roly-polys around the box.

Final score: We lost count. A great evening was had by all.

Many thanks to all the coaches and wishing everyone a very Happy Christmas.
