Throgmorton Cup First Round
CREDITON UNITED 2
EXWICK VILLA 1
(after extra time)
CREDITON'S dogged performance earned them a second round tie with Elmor as they ran out winners in this game against previously unbeaten Exwick.
Despite going a goal down early in the game, Crediton stormed back to win in a game when they were never outclassed by the league leaders.
In eight matches this year, Exwick had only been held to a draw and that was by Crediton. In a team featuring seven ex-Crediton men, including Fred Tonkin, Fred Kingdom and the two Densham lads, Exwick took the game to their hosts from the start.
After 20 minutes they look the lead as a deflected cross found Shaun Densham who twisted and got his header in and despite his best efforts, Lee Waring was unable to keep it out.
In fact it should have been two as Densham failed to connect after a good cross from Harry Taylor.
Waring, in the Kirton goal, was as brave as ever but on various occasions wandered into some strange positions.
Fortunately, the Villa were unable to capitalise on these episodes. A fine run by Lewis Morrish ended in Lloyd Copp's fine effort being saved by Tonkin.
Just before half-time, Jamie Densham's shot was cleared off the line. The second period saw Crediton dominate virtually throughout and on 65 minutes Lloyd Copp's fine turn and shot flew under Tonkin for the equaliser.
It was no more than Crediton deserved. Sean Waring's header was fumbled by Fred Tonkin but the ball stayed out of the visiting "onion bag" and Lloyd Copp was unlucky to see his "piledriver" hit the bar.
As the game moved towards extra time, tiredness began to show in the visitors play but Crediton seemed to be galvanised.
The first period was only seven minutes old when Richard Edworthy galloped on to a long ball and struck a clinical shot past Tonkin for what would prove to be the winner.
Edworthy went close before the end and Steve Goss nearly made it three after good work by Adam Bilcock.
A fine performance by the home side and well deserved bragging rights.
How nice not to be the first team out of this competition for a change.
