CHILDREN from Years 5 and 6 at Landscore Primary School in Crediton have been learning how to dance the Lindy Hop and Jitterbug as part of their PE lessons and performed to parents as part of their open afternoon held on February 8.

The Lindy Hop and Jitterbug are American dances born in Harlem in the 1930s and 40s and are a fusion of many different styles of dance – jazz, tap, breakaway and Charleston.

The children have been taught by Emma Byrne who dances around the South West.

They have had five sessions learning the dance, and they say it has been “great fun”, “difficult to learn” and “made me try something new – I’d never heard of the Lindy Hop”.

They then performed to 70 parents as part of their open afternoon.

The open afternoon was also an opportunity for parents to see work completed on this terms topic – The Ancient Mayans – and work with their child to design a Mayan mask.
