WELL, this is it, the last report of the season for Crediton Bowling Club. As an older person would say “Hasn’t it gone quick”.
We have had a fairly successful season both competitive wise and friendly, what more can one ask for?
On Monday, September 16 we travelled to the seaside for a friendly with Torquay Victoria Park B.C. It might be the end of our season but the tourists are still about. Results: S.Wollacott 16 v 12 R.Gunn 15 v 10 J.Miles 14 v 21 M.Chaplin 8 v 18 C.Rainford 5 v 25 overall 60 / 90 - All in agreement “they had a lovely day out”.
Another final, the Men’s Handicap Cup was completed today between M.Haywood and R.Andrews with R.Andrews coming through a tough test to take the winning podium. Result: 26 – 18 - the only other club competition result is the Men’s Club Championship Final between Rob Paxton and Allan Gibb in a game that like so many others, the score did not reflect the outcome, 21 v 7 to Rob with Allan playing some very creditable running shots but unable to match the skill level of Robert. Well done for getting to the final and good luck to Robert next year in contesting the Champion of Champions.
Tuesday (September 17) was another trip to Wellington B.C. (probably the furthest we travel) where we played a six rink mixed friendly result M.Grant 15 v 13 C.Fribbens 21 v 23 D.Grant 23 v 20 G.Newbery 17 v 15 T.Newbery 15 v 22 M.Haywood 24 v 19 Overall; Crediton 115 – 112 - A close call.
Saturday, September 21 was the second leg of the Pat Moon Trophy, played on a beautiful afternoon at Topsham B.C. where we travelled with the 15 shots we won at home. The game was exceedingly tight with Crediton losing at Topsham by 14 shots but keeping the Trophy by one shot! What a way to finish the season!
Sunday (September 22) was our closing day, a fun afternoon for all who attended. Mrs D.Richards, who has organised our competitions and competitive days for many a season has decided it is time to hang up her chalk and pen regarding Men’s and club days, struggled to find a format for 32 entries but finally reached a compromise of four pairs and five Triples.
Of these Amy Simpson/Trevor Newbery won the pairs with Sue Norton/T.Richards runners-up. By coincidence Alex Simpson/C.Rainford/M.Haywood won the triples with runners-up A.Kellow /J.Heal/T.Chamberlain.
An afternoon tea was provided by everyone and as usual there was far too much. Thank goodness for Slimming World, these teas are far too good to refuse.
May we take this opportunity to thank Dorothy for all her hard work in keeping us up to the mark and only time will tell with her replacement.
With a full programme during winter for members, both full and social, it will still fall upon the few members who keep our club running well, so that we can return next season to a green that is the envy of the county and a club that is solvent and well run.
Thank you to all no matter how large or small your contribution has been, it is appreciated.
If you think you could maybe help with a stint on the bar or help on the green please speak to Shauna Miles our Club Secretary or Ted Staite our Greenkeeper.
