If you’re planning a day trip to Plymouth, The Box is the perfect place to focus your visit. If you’ve never been before, you’ll find it just a short walk from the city centre, shopping areas and historic waterfront. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for a change of scenery but don’t want to travel too far.
Did you know admission to The Box is free? We’re open from 10am-5pm every day expect Mondays and have a series of wonderful galleries filled with highlights from our natural history, maritime history, world cultures, film, photographic and archival collections. Highlights from our historically important Cottonian Collection – including paintings by Sir Joshua Reynolds and sculptures – can also be seen on selected days and times of the week in our research room.
If you’re looking for something extra special, we also host major temporary exhibitions. Beryl Cook: Pride and Joy runs from 24 January-31 May, celebrating one of the South West’s best-loved artists and her legacy. Journeys with Mai is on display from 14 February-14 June and features a stunning portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds, historic portraits and objects and immersive sound and film works. Free tickets for both shows can be booked online.
We also have The Box Kitchen & Bar – ideal for a coffee break, brunch or lunch – while our well-stocked shop offers unique gifts and souvenirs.
And if you want to venture a bit further afield, The Box can fit seamlessly into your itinerary. Why not head up to The Hoe for panoramic views of Plymouth Sound and a winter walk, or look for some new year bargains at the nearby Drake Circus mall before you head home?
