Are you an empty nester, retired, or just looking for a new interest? Stannary Brass Band shows it’s never too late to learn.
For many people, the idea of learning a new instrument later in life might feel daunting. But in Tavistock, Stannary Brass Band is proving that music has no age limit. With free tuition and loan instruments available, the band has welcomed several new learners from the older generation – and their stories show just how rewarding it can be.
Anne, a former piano teacher, had always loved music but had never played in a brass band before. “I thought I’d miss having music in my life after retiring from teaching,” she explained. “Picking up a brass instrument has opened a whole new door for me – it’s such a different experience from the piano, but just as satisfying.”
Dan’s journey began thanks to his wife, already a cornet player with the band. “I had absolutely no musical knowledge,” he laughed. “But I thought, if she can do it, why can’t I? It turns out learning together has been a lot of fun – and it’s something we can share.”
Jenny came to the band at 73 with no formal musical training, though she enjoys singing in two local choirs. “It’s a bit more difficult than I imagined,” she admitted, “but the band volunteers who teach us are so patient, and everyone is so welcoming. Training band practice has become one of the highlights of my week. Come and join us – it’s good for the brain and the lungs!”
Stannary Brass Band, well known in the town for its concerts and appearances at events such as Carnival and Remembrance, is encouraging more older learners to follow Anne, Dan and Jenny’s example. The band stresses that no experience is necessary, instruments are provided on free loan, and there are no membership fees – just a warm welcome and the chance to discover the joy of making music.
“Music brings people together,” said a band spokesperson. “Whether you’ve played before or are starting from scratch, it’s never too late to learn.” To find out more see our website for full details on how to contact us and find out when and where we rehearse.
Alternatively, why not come to our next concert and speak to a member of the band? We will be performing a joint Remembrance Concert with Kelly College on Saturday November 8 at 6:30pm in St Eustachius’ Church. The concert is free to attend but a collection may be made.
