RESIDENTS of Zeal Monachorum really got into the party spirit over the Jubilee Bank Holiday with a whole range of activities.

Challenges set before the holiday included a poster competition for school age children and a “front gate” competition which encouraged villagers to decorate their gates or houses.

The prize for the children was to light the beacon and the joint winners were Abi and Thomas Drake and Kian Panchal – all sharing the honour.

The front gate competition was won by Isabel Harris of Nymphayes Farm and she was awarded a hamper of goodies.

The first day of the Bank Holiday saw many residents holding a yard sale which brought people out in the sun in search of bargains.

There was also a superb History Exhibition co-ordinated by Erica Eden which attracted 150 visitors over the two days that it was open.

To end the first day of celebrations a gathering was held at the Waie Inn which included the planting of a commemorative tree by six of the village’s older residents, followed by a group photo and then onto the lighting of the beacon.

On the following days we had a great Family Fun Dog Show organised by Mandy Smith, an afternoon tea hosted by the WI and a street party which, in the end, was held indoors at the Waie Inn because of the threat of bad weather.

All the events were well supported and everyone seems to have had a good time.
