WHAT a magnificent show the Brown Paper Bag Theatre Company put on for us at Crediton Arts Centre last week (Scarecrow, March 19-22)!

As secretary of Crediton Area History and Museum Society, I knew many months ago that Julian Wild, Tim Hole and friends were writing a story centred on the experience of local farming families in World War One but frankly I never imagined that they could have so vividly brought to life the torment and dilemma the four years brought to local people.

Their research into the changing regulations was first-class, as was the writing and the acting.

The set was simple but very effective and the background music competent and appropriate.

There were impressive acting performances from many familiar and experienced thespians and most encouragingly, several promising young actors.

Well done to all concerned and thank you for bringing such great entertainment to the town.

I only hope the World War One exhibition due to open on April 22 at the museum adds to local awareness of the sacrifices made by so many in that awful episode.
