MID Devon residents are being warned about a new scam offering a council tax refund in order to obtain payment details.

Residents have reported to Mid Devon District Council that they have been contacted by fraudsters using GOV.UK branding in text messages.

The message reads: “Your Recent Council Tax Payment is over paid, check the amount and claim refund now as the due date end soon via https:// govgroup.net thank you”.

If you receive a text message like this, the advice is to please delete and block sender.

Do not reply, click any links or disclose bank account details or any other personal information.

MDDC says it will never ask for your bank details over the telephone.

You can also report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

Guidance is also provided by Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 03454 040 506.
